Overheard a guy at a car dealership say 'I never change my oil, just trade it in every 3 years'

I was waiting for an oil change last Saturday at a Toyota dealer in Austin and this guy in his 50s was bragging to the sales guy about never servicing his cars. He said he just leases or trades every 36 months so someone else deals with the sludge. The salesman laughed along but I could tell he was cringing inside. Made me wonder how many people actually do this and if it's really cheaper in the long run when you factor in depreciation on a neglected engine. Has anyone else run into this kind of thinking at a shop or dealer?

Right, the guy at the next bay at the Jiffy Lube here in Tampa was bragging how he just dumps a quart of 5W-30 in every time the warning light comes on and has never actually paid for a full change! He was dead serious too, talking about his old minivan with 180k miles just guzzling that cheap stuff. The kid working the pit just nodded and rolled his eyes when he turned away. I hate that attitude because you know that car is just going to end up on some lot with a ticking time bomb inside for some poor family to buy.

180k on untouched sludge, that minivan is probably fine honestly.
