My uncle in Pittsburgh told me to always season cast iron with flaxseed oil, what a disaster

He swore by it, said it created the best nonstick layer. I tried it three times over six months on my 12-inch skillet and the coating flaked off every single time, got bits of black in my eggs. After the third attempt I finally switched to just plain vegetable oil like everyone else recommends and it's been perfect since. Has anyone else been led astray by a family member's 'expert' kitchen advice?

Man, I ruined my first skillet trying flaxseed oil too and I'm still mad about it.

Ugh same lmao. I followed that whole "scientific" seasoning guide to the letter and that first egg stuck so bad it became a science project. Never again with that flaxseed stuff lol.

Oh man @gavinw45, that's rough! I tried it on a pan my GRANDMA gave me and she still brings it up.
