I finally caught myself before telling my neighbor their lawn mower was trash
Went over to borrow a rake last weekend and saw their mower just sitting there with a flat tire and rust all over the blade. Almost said 'dude you need a new one' but bit my tongue. Turns out it was their dad's old mower from 1987 and they keep it around for sentimental reasons. Has anyone else almost insulted something that had a story behind it?

Wait, is it really that deep though? It's cool they have feelings about their dad's old mower, but a flat tire and rusty blade doesn't mean you can't say something nice about it.

Thing is, people attach memories to broken junk all the time. That flat tire might remind them of the time their dad fixed it after they ran it over a rock. Rusty blade just means it's been sitting awhile, not that the mower wasn't a good one. Sometimes the small stuff is what makes it deep.

A flat tire and a rusty blade don't make something deep, they just make it junk. Maybe people cling to that stuff because it's easier than admitting it's time to move on. @linda500 is romanticizing a pile of scrap metal that hasn't worked in a decade.
