Biting my tongue when a friend said she 'needed' a $4,000 couch

Overheard my friend Sarah telling our group she absolutely needed this fancy leather couch for her new apartment. I almost blurted out that her old one was fine and she just wanted to show off for Instagram. But I caught myself because honestly, who am I to judge how someone spends their money? Last year I dropped $600 on a weighted blanket I used exactly twice. The thing that stopped me was remembering how I felt when someone questioned my dumb purchases. So I just nodded and asked about the color instead. Has anyone else had that moment where you wanted to call out someone's spending but kept quiet?

It's not that wild once you think about it. A well made couch from a decent brand can easily run 3 to 5 grand these days, and that's before you add on things like fabric upgrades or a chaise lounge. The cheaper stuff at big box stores falls apart in 2 years, so you end up spending that much anyway if you buy a few of them over time. I'd rather buy one good couch that lasts 15 years than keep replacing junk every couple of years.
