Bit my tongue when my sister in law said my rescue dog was "damaged goods"
She dropped that line at Thanksgiving in front of everyone, and I just smiled and passed the rolls instead of telling her my dog learned "sit" in 3 days, which is faster than her kid. Anyone else hold back a comment that would've torched the whole dinner?
My aunt Carol did the same thing at Easter about my cat being "just a stray" while she was on her fourth glass of wine and had already cried twice about her flight being delayed. There is this whole group of people who think animals without a receipt are somehow lesser, like a dog from a shelter comes with a warning label instead of a story. My cat learned to use the toilet in a week (okay, sort of, he fell in once) and her purebred something or other still pees on her guest bed. The pattern I keep seeing is that people who say stuff like that are usually talking about themselves, not the animal. Passing the rolls was the classiest move you could have made, because the second you bring up her kid the whole table turns into a boxing ring and you look like the bad guy even when you are right.
