Almost told my neighbor his 'free mulch' was full of poison ivy roots

Three weeks of digging and I'd still take that free mulch over paying $80 at the garden center. Poison ivy roots are easy enough to pick out if you're not blind, and a little vinegar spray kills what's left. Honestly, your neighbor was probably just trying to help and you almost embarrassed him for no good reason. Who hasn't gotten a few surprise weeds in their free soil or compost? Mulch from a tree service is always gonna have some wild stuff mixed in, that's just how it works. Next time just sift through it and move on, nobody needs a lecture about free dirt.

Wait, so you're telling me you just pick the poison ivy roots out by hand and that's fine? I gotta admit, I used to be the type who'd throw the whole pile away if I saw one suspicious weed, but you (@the_margaret) basically just laid out a system that makes way more sense. Three weeks of digging for $80 sounds about right, especially when town dump mulch here is basically free and comes with a side of mystery seeds anyway. I might give it a shot this spring, just gotta keep the vinegar handy.
