Watched a pitmaster at a little joint in Lockhart use a charcoal starter chimney for wood chunks
I was standing at Kreuz Market last Saturday and saw this old guy light a chimney full of post oak like it was charcoal and now I’m wondering if that’s a common trick I’ve been missing all along, anyone else do that with splits?

Wait, isn't that basically like trying to start a campfire with a hairdryer instead of kindling? Seems like you'd just end up with a bunch of half-charred chunks that never actually catch, or worse, a chimney full of splinters and smoke. I've seen guys try it at competitions and they always end up coughing and swearing while their wood just smolders.

Had a buddy try this with hickory in his driveway last summer. Lit the chimney, walked away to grab a beer, and came back to flames shooting three feet out the top with sparks flying into his neighbor's yard. Whole thing nearly tipped over when the wood started popping. He still swears by it but keeps a fire extinguisher nearby now lol.
