Hot take: I was using too much smoke on my brisket for years

Back in 2021 I was at a competition in Kansas City and a pitmaster named Don told me my brisket tasted like an ashtray... I was throwing on three chunks of hickory every time I fired up my offset smoker. Now I just use one small piece and let the fire do the talking. Has anyone else had that moment where they realized less wood meant better flavor?
