Spent $85 on a "pro" cake turntable from a kitchen store in Ann Arbor and my frosting still slid off
So I was making a birthday cake for my niece two weeks ago and decided the reason my frosting job looked bad was my old plastic turntable from college. I drove to a fancy kitchen shop in Ann Arbor and dropped $85 on a heavy marble one that spins smooth. Used it that night, got the cake all frosted, then watched the whole bottom layer slowly slide sideways like it was trying to leave. Turns out the cake was still warm inside and no turntable on earth fixes that. Has anyone found a cheap way to check cake temp before frosting, or do I just need to sit on my hands for 4 hours?
Man, $85 on a turntable and the cake still slid off? Hate to say it but the turntable was never the problem. A warm cake will slide no matter what you set it on, even a marble one. And honestly, does it really matter that much if the bottom layer leans a little? People are gonna eat it in five minutes and nobody will remember the frosting slid. If you want to check temp, just touch the side of the pan with the back of your hand, if it feels warm at all, wait. Or stick a clean finger in the middle of the cake, same deal. Sitting on your hands for a few hours is free and it actually works, way better than throwing more money at kitchen gadgets.
