Rant: My sourdough starter turned into a science experiment gone wrong

I tried using pineapple juice to kickstart a new starter, like some blog from Seattle suggested. After 4 days, it wasn't rising, it just smelled like sweet, boozy fruit punch and had a weird pink film. I learned that sometimes the simplest method, just flour and water, is best. Has anyone else had a starter go completely off the rails with a fancy trick?

Didn't some baker say pineapple juice can attract the wrong kind of yeast?

That baker @the_oscar mentioned forgot about the pH factor.

Nah, I see it different @anna_fox7. pH matters but yeast strains are way more adaptable than people give them credit for, so it's not the whole story.
