My $4 thrift store scale ruined 6 batches of bread before I figured it out

Found this nice looking kitchen scale at Goodwill for $4. Looked brand new. But after 6 straight failed loaves that came out like bricks I finally checked it against a bag of flour. Thing was off by 40 grams on every reading. Threw it out and got a new Ozeri for $18 on Amazon. Has anyone else had a thrift store tool mess up their baking results?

40 grams off is brutal. That's like a whole egg worth of weight. Six batches of flour wasted is rough, you're a saint for not catching it sooner. Thrift store scales are such a gamble with the calibration.

Oh wow, @felix147 you're totally right about the gamble. Actually, my sister once bought a used bread machine at a garage sale that looked perfect but somehow added an extra 15 minutes to the bake cycle without telling anyone. We ended up with charcoal loaf after charcoal loaf until she figured out the timer was busted. Is your new Ozeri working out better so far?
