Walked into a bakery in Portland and saw they charge $12 for a loaf of sourdough
I was visiting Portland last month and stopped into this hip little bakery. The place was packed and the bread looked amazing, but I nearly choked when I saw the price. $12 for a single loaf of sourdough that was smaller than what I bake at home for maybe $2. I asked the guy behind the counter why and he said it's the "local organic heritage flour and 36 hour fermentation." I get that quality costs, but has anyone else seen prices getting this wild or is it just me?

Is everything just getting fancier and more expensive for no real reason these days?

Take the "artisan" label and run with it. I saw a place charging $14 for a "heritage grain" baguette that was basically a breadstick with pretensions. They pre-slice it for you, too, like that's worth the extra $5. It's not just bread, either. I've seen $9 lattes and $18 sandwiches at these spots. People line up. The kicker is half the time the bread is dry by the next day. My $2 loaf from the grocery store lasts a week.
