TIL my sourdough starter is 8 years old this week
I was cleaning out my baking notes and found the date I began it, back in 2016. That's over 2,900 days of feeding and using the same culture. It's wild to think how many loaves have come from that one jar. Has anyone else kept a starter going for a decade or more?

over 2,900 days of feeding"... do you ever take a vacation from it?

Jenny's point about vacations is key because it shows how this becomes a lifestyle, not just a hobby. You'd need a trusted person to take over, which adds a whole other layer of commitment. It makes me wonder if the real record is about building a support system, not just personal discipline. That daily need totally changes how you plan any time away. The mental load of arranging care might be bigger than the daily feeding task itself.

That's seriously impressive (mine always dies after a few months, honestly). Wonder if the flavor changes that much over that many years.
