Dropped $190 on a grain mill and my arm is still mad about it
Bought a hand crank mill to save money on specialty flour and after 20 minutes of cranking I had enough for one sad little loaf. Does anyone actually use one of these things long term or did I just buy an expensive paperweight?
I used to roll my eyes at the hand crank people and figured they were just gluttons for punishment. Then my cheap electric mill burned out on me twice in one year, and I started borrowing my neighbor's crank model out of pure spite. Turns out the trick is you don't crank it all at once, you do a few cups here and there while dinner cooks or you're waiting on the kettle. Twenty minutes straight is brutal, but five minutes three times a week is nothing. Also the grind setting matters way more than people admit, too fine and you're fighting it the whole way. Give it a month of small batches before you write it off, mine went from paperweight to the thing I actually reach for.
