Chose between my grandma's hand mixer and a $400 stand mixer for a 6 hour wedding cake job
Last month my cousin asked me to do her wedding cake, 4 tiers, buttercream, the whole thing, and I had a real decision to make. My grandma's old hand mixer from the 70s still works fine for cookies and quick breads, but I had 6 batches of frosting to whip and only one afternoon to do it. I stood in the kitchen at 6am staring at both of them, the hand mixer with its cracked cord and the new stand mixer still in the box from a Black Friday deal in November. I went with the hand mixer. My arm was dead by the second batch, and I had to stop and let it cool down twice because the motor was getting hot, but I knew exactly how it handled. The stand mixer has a paddle attachment that I haven't figured out yet, and I didn't want to learn a new tool the day before a wedding. The cake turned out fine, my cousin cried, but my wrist hurt for 3 days and I'm pretty sure I need to just use the new one next time. Anyone else keep reaching for the old tool even when the new one is sitting right there?
Your wrist hurt for 3 days over a cake. Is that really a win? The cake came out fine, sure, but you basically made the job harder on yourself just because the old mixer felt familiar. A stand mixer is not some mystery machine, you slap the paddle on and turn it on, that is the whole learning curve. Next time just use the new one and save your arm.
