Warning: don't pay a lawyer $500 to send a nasty letter to your neighbor

I hired a lawyer to write a cease and desist letter about my neighbor's barking dogs. Cost me $500 and all it did was make him mad enough to let them bark even more. Has anyone ever actually had one of those letters work?

Watched my friend try this exact thing. She paid some lawyer $400 to write a letter about her neighbor's leaf blower at 7am on Sundays. The neighbor went ballistic and started leaf blowing at 6am every day just out of spite. She ended up having to move six months later because she couldn't handle the noise torture anymore.

Tried a different approach with my own neighbor drama last year. I just went over with a six pack of beer and told him straight up, "Hey man, your music at 11pm keeps waking my kid up, any chance you can keep it down after 10?" He apologized and actually started keeping it low after that. Sometimes a face to face chat works way better than getting lawyers involved, saves money and doesn't make enemies.
