Tried the "talk to them first" approach with my loud upstairs neighbor and it backfired hard
I lived below a guy named Dave for about 8 months who had his TV cranked up until 2 AM every night. One neighbor told me just to call the cops, but I figured I'd be a decent person and go knock on his door first. So last Wednesday I went up there, real calm, just asked if he could turn it down after midnight. He looked me dead in the eye, said "nah, I work nights, deal with it," and slammed the door. Now the volume is actually louder than before and I'm stuck filing noise complaints with the landlord instead. Has anyone else had the "nice talk" approach make things worse instead of better?

Dave basically upgraded from rude neighbor to full time villain after that.

Yeah, 'full time villain' is spot on. Had a guy down my street who started parking across my driveway every day, and when I asked him to stop he just smiled and kept doing it.

Hang on though, maybe Dave had a really bad reason for the upgrade. From what I saw, the neighbor was leaving trash bags right on Dave's side of the property line for weeks before this. It doesn't make it right, but sometimes people snap when they've been pushed.
