TIL putting up a cheap security camera stopped my neighbor's dog from barking all night
My neighbor's lab mix would bark at shadows from 11pm to 5am every night. I tried talking to him three times, he said 'dogs bark, deal with it'. So I mounted a $35 Wyze cam on my garage facing his yard and put up a sign that said '24/7 recording'. The barking stopped same day. Now he keeps his dog inside after 10pm. Did I get lucky or did that dude just not want evidence of neglect?

Gets people to play nice once they think someone's watching. It's that classic thing where people won't do the right thing until there's a chance they'll get caught. I see it everywhere, from people not returning shopping carts unless an employee is nearby to drivers suddenly following the speed limit when a cop pulls up behind them. Your neighbor probably figured you'd eventually post that footage somewhere or call animal control, and suddenly he cares about being a decent person. Funny how that works, having a cheap camera do more than three polite conversations could.

My friend had the exact same thing happen with her neighbor in Austin. She put up a Ring camera after her dog kept getting barked at through the fence, and suddenly the guy started waving and acting all friendly. Funny how a $30 camera can solve a problem that months of nice chats couldn't.

Ha, that's amazing. I had a friend in Denver who had pretty much the same thing happen. His neighbor's dog was barking all night and the guy just shrugged it off. So my friend put up a cheap fake security camera, not even a real one, just a dummy with a blinking light. The barking stopped that night, and now the neighbor brings his dog in before 9pm every day. It's wild how fast people change when they think someone might actually see what's going on. Your neighbor definitely wanted to hide something if a $35 camera was all it took.
