The time I tried polite confrontation with my neighbor and got a surprise visit from his mom
I finally walked over to talk to my neighbor Dave about his dog barking all night for two weeks straight. I kept it calm, said hey man can you keep it down after 10 PM. He nodded and said sure no problem. Next morning his mom shows up at my door at 6 AM yelling that I'm harassing her son. Learned my lesson: some neighbors don't handle things like adults, they call in backup. Has anyone else had a simple talk blow up into something weird like this?

Oh come on, you're the one who escalated this. You literally showed up at Dave's door and confronted him about his personal property making noise on his own property. What did you expect? A bouquet of roses? His mom is probably just looking out for her kid because you came across as the aggressive neighbor. @daniel593 is right about documenting stuff, but you should also consider if maybe you were more harsh than you think. A 6 AM yelling match is annoying, sure, but you started this whole chain of events by inserting yourself into his life over something that could've been handled with noise-canceling headphones or a call to the landlord.

Back in 2018, I had this neighbor who started blasting polka music every single morning at 5 AM. I tried earplugs, those noise-canceling headphones, even slept in my car one night. Finally went over there and the guy was half deaf, didn't even know his radio was that loud. We ended up fixing his antenna together and now we grab coffee sometimes. Point is, you never know what's actually going on until you talk to someone without the backup crew and the yelling.

Yeah, the "called in backup" thing is so real. I'd probably just start documenting everything with a date and time just in case his mom decides to escalate further. Maybe keep your interactions with Dave to a quick wave from across the street after this.
