The neighbor who promised to split the cost of a new fence then backed out

Last spring my next door neighbor came over all friendly, saying how the old chain link fence between our yards was an eyesore and we should replace it with nice cedar panels. He even picked out the wood and said he'd cover half, maybe $600 each. I went ahead and bought all the materials, spent a full Saturday digging post holes and setting them in concrete, which was about 8 hours of work. When I asked him for his share the next day, he suddenly started talking about how his car needed repairs and he couldn't afford it right now. I ended up eating the full $1,200 and now I've got a half done fence with one side that doesn't match because he refused to let me work on his property. Has anyone else had a neighbor promise to pay for something then just bail?

Nah, that's a classic bait and switch right there. Your neighbor played you for a sucker, plain and simple. At least you learned the lesson for only $1200, some folks get stuck with way worse.

Wait, did he actually say it was a project truck before you handed over the cash or did you find that out after?
