If your neighbor leaves their dumb dog out barking all night, try a high pitched whistle at 3am

I know it sounds mean but I was at my wits end after 3 weeks of this. The owners go to bed at 10pm and leave the dog out til 6am. I bought a cheap metal whistle from the dollar store for like $2. Walked to the fence at 3am and gave it one quick blast. Dog yelped and went quiet. Did it again next night. Now the dog runs inside after one blast and I think the owners finally get the hint. Has anyone else found a weird trick that actually works better than calling the cops?
