My roommate boils eggs for 12 minutes because a TikTok chef said so
I caught him doing this on Tuesday and asked why. He said some chef with 2 million followers swears by 12 minutes for "perfect" eggs, so now every egg in our fridge comes out gray inside. I showed him my 8 minute method and he told me I was doing it wrong. Does anyone actually follow cooking advice from people who never say what temperature the water should be?
The water temp thing drives me nuts too. Most of these TikTok chefs just say "boil water" and never mention that starting eggs in cold water versus dropping them into a rolling boil changes everything. Cold start takes longer to heat up but the whites stay softer, while boiling start cooks the outside faster. Twelve minutes in boiling water gives you that green ring around the yolk every time, which means it's overcooked. Eight minutes is way closer to right for a jammy center.
