That $50 'vintage' lamp I bought at a flea market turned out to be a cheap repro
I thought I scored big at a flea market in St. Louis last month, snagged this old brass banker's lamp for $50. The guy swore it was from the 1920s, talked about the patina and how it needed rewiring. Got it home, took it apart to clean it up, and found a sticker on the inside that said 'Made in China, 2018.' Total fake, not worth more than maybe $15 at a hardware store. I wasted an afternoon messing with it and now it's just sitting in my garage. Has anyone else gotten burned by those 'antique' dealers who just lie to your face about what they're selling?

Ain't that just the way trust goes in everything nowadays?

Think it comes down to the little things breaking first. Like when a neighbor borrows your lawnmower and returns it with a dent, that's trust gone for next time. Or when a mechanic charges you double for a part you could've ordered yourself, you never go back. Big institutions are one thing, but people see cracks in the everyday stuff and it spreads to everything else.
