My aunt got me a 'grow your own mushrooms' kit for my birthday and the whole thing turned into a science experiment gone wrong
So my aunt knows I like cooking and she got me this mushroom growing kit for my birthday back in March. The box said I'd have fresh oysters in 10 days. I followed the instructions exactly, misted the bag twice a day like it told me, kept it out of direct sun on my kitchen counter. By day 6 the whole thing smelled like a wet basement in July and there was this white fuzzy stuff creeping up the sides of the plastic. I called the number on the box and the guy just laughed and told me I probably 'introduced contamination' like I was running a lab in my apartment. I ended up tossing the whole bag in the dumpster behind my building and my kitchen smelled weird for like 3 days after. The kicker is she asked me two weeks later how the mushrooms were and I had to stand there and pretend I'd been eating gourmet fungus for a week. Anyone else get one of these kits and actually make it work, or is this just how they all end up?
The 'wet basement in July' smell is so real, mine went straight to mold city by day 5 and I never even got one mushroom out of it. You're not alone, those kits are way harder than the box makes them sound.
