My aunt gifted me a singing fish plaque in 2019 and I finally beat it at its own game
My aunt gave me one of those Big Mouth Billy Bass plaques for Christmas in 2019 and it sat in a closet for two years because I felt bad throwing it out. One night I was cleaning and it started belting out "Take Me to the River" every time my cat walked past the motion sensor, which was funny for about ten minutes. So I took the batteries out and mounted it in my garage right above the trash bin, and now the joke is that guests have to press it before they toss anything. It ended up being the most used gift I ever got, just not for the reason she planned. Has anyone else turned a bad gift into a house rule like this?
Loving this so much because I have been on the receiving end of a gift that missed the mark and I know that weird guilt of not wanting to toss it but also not wanting it in your life. Turning it into a garage trash bin ritual is honestly genius and way better than letting it collect dust. I did something kind of similar with a decorative soap dispenser my mom got me shaped like a seashell that played a little tune. I made it the official hand wash timer and now everyone in my house holds their hands under the water until the song ends. Bad gifts that become house rules are the best kind of revenge. Your aunt would either love it or be so confused and both are wins.
