My aunt gave me a pet rock painting kit 3 years ago
It was a little box with a smooth gray stone, three tiny paint pots, and a brush that fell apart after two strokes. I was 27 years old at the time, and she handed it to me with a straight face at the family Christmas party in Cincinnati. The paint colors were beige, off-white, and tan, so I couldn't even make it look like anything fun. I still have it sitting on my shelf as a joke between me and my brother. Has anyone else gotten a gift that felt like it was meant for a 5 year old?

... wait, beige, off-white, and TAN? That's not a pet rock painting kit, that's a tax write-off from a closing craft store. I can't believe she handed that to a grown adult with a straight face like it was a hot gift idea. My aunt once gave me a "make your own birdhouse" kit that was literally just popsicle sticks and wood glue, no instructions or even a picture on the box. It still sits on my dresser next to an old coffee mug I hate, just as a reminder that some people really don't know what to buy for anyone over the age of ten. The fact that the brush fell apart after two strokes is honestly the most insulting part... like they knew the whole thing was a joke anyway.

C'mon @claire_wells87, you're being a bit harsh. The brush falling apart is funny but maybe the rocks were a soft launch into a hobby she thought you might enjoy. Some people dont know how to gift for adults and they try with what they got. At least she didnt get you another candle.
