My aunt gave me a gently used sponge as a housewarming gift
I swear this actually happened last month. My aunt showed up with a sponge that had clearly been used to wash dishes - it still had that weird yellow stain and smelled like old soup. She wrapped it in a paper towel and said 'everyone needs a sponge for their new place.' I found out later she gave the same kind of gift to my cousin when he moved out. Apparently shes been doing this for 20 years now recycling old sponges as 'practical gifts.' Has anyone else gotten something that was literally trash but wrapped like a present?

Nah, "gently used" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. That's just used.

Haven't we all gotten something kind of weird from a relative before? I mean, a used sponge is a little odd, but at least she was trying to be practical and save you a trip to the store. Maybe she honestly thinks she's helping out by reusing something that still works fine.
