Can we talk about the before and after of getting a 'gourmet' popcorn tin for Christmas
The first year I got one of those giant popcorn tins I thought it was awesome, but by the third year the cheese layer had this weird chemical taste and the caramel was just a sticky brick - has anyone else noticed the quality drop in those things or did my tastebuds just change over 4 holiday seasons?

1998 was the PEAK year for popcorn tin quality and you people just don't appreciate a classic. The cheese layer is SUPPOSED to have that slight metallic tang it's part of the gourmet experience and the caramel brick just means they used real butter.

Man I totally used to think the quality was just nostalgia or whatever but @bennett.noah might be onto something. I got a tin in 2022 and that cheese layer tasted like licking a penny but looking back my grandma's tins from the 90s had that same weird tang. Maybe the caramel brick is honestly part of the deal too because I remember chipping a tooth on a chunk of it as a kid and still thinking it was the best thing ever. You might be right that we just forgot what they always tasted like.
