Why nobody talks about how long water crossings actually take

I spent a whole afternoon trying to cross the Kern River on the High Sierra Trail last June because the log bridge was washed out. It took me nearly 4 hours to find a safe spot with a slow enough current and shallow enough depth to wade across with my pack. Has anyone else had a simple river crossing turn into a half day ordeal?

4 hours seems like a lot for crossing a creek, were you trying to keep your boots dry or something? Most of the time you can just pick a spot and go.

Yall remember when @milesj70 said pick a spot and go? My buddy spent five hours stuck on a rock midstream like a confused turtle.
