Used GPS waypoints on the Colchuck Lake trail for years, then switched back to paper maps and it wasn't even close
My phone died 4 miles in last July and I had to read actual contour lines for the first time in a decade, which turned out to be way easier than fighting a screen glare. Anyone else go back to paper after years of apps, or am I just getting old?
The "fighting a screen glare" part really hit home for me. I got so tired of squinting at my phone on bright days that I started printing out the little Caltopo maps before every hike. Honestly the paper ones are just faster for me now, I can spread the whole thing out on a rock and see everything at once instead of pinching and zooming. The one thing I do miss is the GPS dot showing exactly where I am, but I've gotten better at matching up landmarks to the map, which is a skill I kinda lost for a while there. It also helps that you never have to worry about battery or a random software update breaking your map on the drive up. Sounds less like getting old and more like you just found what works better for you lol.
