Showerthought: A ranger in Shenandoah told me the AT thru-hike is really 2,190 miles, not the 2,189 I had memorized
I was planning a 4 day section hike near Front Royal last month and stopped at the visitor center to check water sources. The ranger pulled out a laminated map and mentioned the trail length changes almost every year because of reroutes and land swaps. She said the current official number is about 2,190.2 miles, and that the 2,189 figure I had stuck in my head was from an older measurement. I ended up downloading the latest GPX file from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy that night, and sure enough my old paper map was off by almost a mile in one stretch near Harper's Ferry. Has anyone else run into outdated mileage on their maps and had to redo a whole day's plan because of it?
