My uncle hiked the AT in 1987 with a paper map and now he thinks my GPS is cheating
Sat on my uncle's porch in Asheville last weekend and he pulled out his old trail journal from his thru hike. He did the whole thing with a paper map and a compass, said he got lost near Clingmans Dome for 6 hours and just slept in a hollow tree. When I showed him my phone with the Guthook app he laughed and said I'm walking the trail from a screen instead of my gut. Do you all still carry paper maps as backup or is that totally dead now?
