I finally stopped planning my trips around the big name trails in Colorado

After a ranger in Buena Vista suggested a 4-day loop in the Collegiate Peaks wilderness last fall, I realized the quiet routes are often better. Anyone have a favorite lesser-known path in that area?

Try getting lost on purpose, it's way more fun than following a map.

My friend Sarah got totally turned around in the Smokies last fall, missed her trail marker by a mile. She ended up finding this tiny waterfall with a deep pool nobody else was at, spent the whole afternoon there. It really proves black.val's point about ditching the map. She said it was the best part of her trip, way better than the crowded spots she planned to see. Now she always leaves some time to just wander off trail.

Remember my buddy who found that perfect lake just by turning off the trail?
