Found out the Appalachian Trail has over 100,000 steps in just the first 10 miles

I was planning a section hike in Georgia and got curious about actual step counts. Someone on a hiking forum had tracked it with a pedometer app. I always figured those numbers were exaggerated but apparently the rocky terrain really adds up. Has anyone else bothered to count steps on a specific stretch and found something weird?

@morgan_ramirez did your buddy's phone count feel way off from his actual steps?

Heard somewhere that the average person's stride shortens on rocky trails, so that 100,000 step number might actually be low for some people. A buddy of mine did the Georgia approach trail and said his phone tracked way more steps than he expected. Idk if step counting apps are super accurate though, terrain can mess with the sensors.
