A guy at REI in Denver told me my route plan was backwards, and he was right
Last month I was standing in the map aisle at the REI in Denver picking up a new topo for a 3 day loop in the Indian Peaks. Some older guy next to me glanced at my route and just said "you're going up the boring side." I shrugged it off at first, but then he pulled out his own map and showed me how flipping my direction put the big views at mile 4 instead of mile 18. I ran it his way the next weekend and it was a totally different trip, way better. So what's your rule for picking which way to walk a loop?
I usually check where the climbs land relative to the good stuff. If going clockwise means I hit a pass in the morning when I'm fresh and still get the valley views before camp, that settles it. Same loop walked the other way can feel like a totally different trip even when the miles are the same.
