Shoutout to the old-school directory link building we used to do

I tried reviving that tactic for a local bakery site last month and got zero traction, but one solid guest post on a relevant food blog brought in 5 strong links. Has anyone else seen a total flip like that on a recent project?

Totally get it. I tried the same thing with a local hardware store client, submitting to every directory I could find. Felt like throwing links into a black hole. Then we got one mention in a DIY newsletter from a real carpenter, and it drove more real traffic and better links than fifty directory submissions. The old playbook just doesn't work when everyone ignores those pages now.

Yeah that's the thing, those old directories feel like ghost towns now. Reminds me of when a friend spent months getting listed everywhere for his bike shop, only for one shoutout from a local cycling club's blog to actually get people in the door. Simon_coleman is right, it's all about where real people actually look and trust. Feels like we spent years chasing the wrong numbers.

Wait, your friend spent months on directories for a bike shop? That's wild, @the_holly.
