Serious question, is anyone else tired of the 'broken link building' hype?

Last month I spent a full week trying broken link building on a dozen sites in my niche. Found 30 broken pages, emailed the site owners, and got exactly one reply that led to a nofollow link. Meanwhile, the people who swear by it act like it's the only method that works. Has anyone else put in serious hours on this and gotten basically nothing back?
