Pro tip: I ditched HARO for direct email pitches and my link rate doubled in 3 months

Everyone keeps telling me HARO is the free way to go, but honestly I spent 2 months sending 60+ pitches and got maybe 2 decent links. So I switched to finding small blogs in my niche and emailing them a real story, not a press release. One gardening blog in Portland actually linked to my soil testing guide after I offered to rewrite their outdated page for free. That one email got me more traffic than all my HARO effort combined. Has anyone else had better luck with cold outreach over the big databases, or am I just unlucky with HARO timing?

Did you find the blogs just by searching small sites in your niche, or did you use some other trick? Honestly, same thing happened to me with HARO.
