Met a guy at a coffee shop who showed me why HARO pitches fail

I was in line at this little place near my apartment last Tuesday, and the barista recognized my laptop sticker (an SEO conference one, you know). Some guy behind me started chatting, turns out he runs a niche tech blog. I told him I was frustrated with HARO backlinks not sticking, and he just laughed and said 'your pitches sound like every other pitch.' He showed me his inbox - he gets like 50 a day. He told me the ones he actually responds to are the ones where the person has clearly read his last 3 posts and references something specific. I never thought to do that. Has anyone else gotten feedback like this from someone on the other end of HARO?

oh right, because we're all supposed to be psychic mind readers now and know exactly which random blog post will get us a backlink. guess i need to add stalker to my resume.

Six blog posts in one week just for a chance at a backlink? That's some dedication right there.

Is it really that deep though, just read a couple posts before you pitch.
