Got a .edu backlink from a local college just by offering to speak at their career day

I emailed the career center at a community college near me last month offering to do a 30 minute talk about working in education, and they put my website link right on their resources page for students to find.

I read somewhere that colleges actually want more local professionals to reach out like this.

Last tuesday I was at the grocery store and the deli guy was telling me how he got free tickets to a minor league baseball game just by asking the team's community outreach person if they could use a local food donation. It's wild how many doors crack open when you just ask nice and offer something small in return. People are so used to getting ignored that when someone offers to help without demanding much, they remember you. That college career center probably gets a hundred emails a day from companies trying to sell them something, so a genuine offer to give time stands out like crazy. Same thing happened to a buddy of mine who taught a free cooking class at the library and ended up with their program featured on the town website for months.
