A forum old-timer straightened out my anchor text strategy
A guy on a SEO Discord last spring told me to stop stuffing exact-match anchors and just use my brand name for most links. I followed it for 8 months and my domain rating climbed from 34 to 41, has anyone else gotten that kind of result from going light on anchors?

The brand anchor switch is real, and it often works way better than people expect. I did the same thing after reading a bunch of case studies, and my site went from a 38 to a 45 in about six months. The trick is that exact-match anchors look spammy to Google if you overdo it, so pulling way back lets your link profile breathe a bit. Now I only use exact-match maybe 5% of the time, and the rest is my brand or just the URL. The other thing nobody talks about is how much easier it is to get links when you only ask for your brand name, people are way more willing to link that way. Your jump from 34 to 41 is solid proof that the old school advice was just outdated.
