That whole 'just be yourself' advice finally clicked for me

I was on a date with a guy named Ryan at a coffee shop in Portland last week, and I overheard the barista telling someone that the worst dates are when people try too hard to be what they think you want. I realized I had been doing that for months, pretending to be into hiking and craft beer when I really just want to stay home and play video games. So on my next date with a different person, I just admitted I hate camping and love cheesy horror movies, and we actually had a good laugh about it. Has anyone else found that ditching the fake interests made dating less stressful?

Totally agree with this. Pretending to like stuff just makes dating feel like a job interview. You end up stuck with someone who likes fake you, not real you. That barista was right on the money. Way better to just be honest and see if there's actual chemistry. Saves everyone time and awkwardness.

Three dates in a row where they "love hiking" but can't name a single trail, @finleyf88?

Yeah @finleyf88 nailed it, fake you just wastes everyone's time.
