That awkward dinner where I tried the 'compliment sandwich' trick
I was on a third date at a little Italian place in Denver and kept stumbling over what to say, then I remembered a friend's advice to just ask about their weirdest hobby and it totally saved the night. Has anyone else found that one random question that breaks the silence?

My go to is asking "what's the most useless skill you've ever learned?" It always gets a laugh and leads into funny stories. I used it on a first date at a coffee shop and the guy spent 20 minutes explaining how he can solve a Rubik's cube with his eyes closed. It broke the ice way better than any compliment sandwich ever could. The trick is that it's low pressure and shows you're curious about them. Plus their answer tells you a lot about their personality and sense of humor. Just keep it casual and don't make it sound like an interview question.

Hang on, he spent 20 minutes on a Rubik's cube thing on a first date? That's wild, I would have been totally lost after the first five minutes. But hey, I guess if it works it works, that's a pretty solid icebreaker actually since it lets people be a little weird and proud of it.
