Remember when first dates were just coffee? My worst one ever was a full dinner at The Rusty Anchor in 2015.

We ordered a three course meal and the silence was so loud I counted 17 ships in the harbor out the window. Now I always suggest a quick drink first, because you can't escape a bad vibe over clams casino. Anyone else have a go-to 'easy out' first date spot?

My buddy Mark got trapped at a fancy steakhouse once. He said the waiter kept refilling their bread basket every time the conversation died, which was like every three minutes. They ended up with a table covered in untouched rolls. His rule now is strictly a walk in the park with coffee to go. That way if it's bad, you just finish your drink and say you gotta get back to your dog.

Oh, that's the absolute truth. I had a dinner date like that once, and you feel so stuck when the conversation just won't start. I totally get what @leelewis's friend Mark went through with that endless bread basket. My rule now is a public place with a clear end time, like meeting for one ice cream cone right before the shop closes. That way, if it's great, you can always suggest a walk after, but if it's bad, you're already at the exit.

Honestly, the best easy out is a place with terrible parking. You can always blame the meter running out.
