Rant: Realized I was doing all the talking for 3 years straight
Last month I went on a date at a diner in Cleveland and caught myself mid rant about my job. She just sat there nodding, and it hit me that every date I'd been on since 2021 was me performing a one man show. My old roommate even joked I could talk to a wall and call it conversation. So I tried an experiment: ask one question about her and shut up for 10 minutes. Turns out she had a wild story about rescuing a racoon from a dumpster, and the date actually flowed after that. Has anyone else suddenly realized they were the boring one the whole time, and how did you break the habit?
My buddy Dave does this thing at happy hours where he'll ask a question then just wait. First time he did it I thought he was being weird but the other person actually lit up. I started paying attention to it everywhere, like at family dinners my uncle never asks anyone anything and we all just sit there while he talks about his lawn. It's such a small move, just one question and then shutting up, but almost nobody does it. You caught it way earlier than most people ever do.
