My sister's 'just be yourself' advice ruined my best date setup
She told me to stop planning the scripted jokes and icebreakers I always use. Said women can smell rehearsed stuff from a mile away. So I went in cold with zero prep on a first date at a diner in Tacoma. Spent 20 minutes talking about my dental floss brand preferences because my brain froze. She actually laughed at that, but the silence gaps were brutal. Even the waitress looked uncomfortable. I'm back to my index cards next time. Has anyone else had 'be yourself' backfire this hard? Or is improv just not for some of us?

The whole "just be yourself" thing is like telling someone to "just relax" when they can't sleep. It sounds good but it doesn't actually help you do anything different. I've seen this everywhere, not just dating. Like when someone says "just be confident" at a job interview or "just be funny" at a party. You cant just switch off the stuff that got you there in the first place. The floss bit actually sounds kinda real though, sometimes people laugh at the awkward stuff more than the jokes tbh.
