My date last week thought a 'fun fact' about medieval torture devices was good dinner talk
We were at this little Italian place downtown, and he just drops that apparently 15% of people in a survey said they'd find a history of torture 'interesting' on a first date. He read it in some weird online article. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but talking about thumbscrews while I'm eating spaghetti is a bit much. The whole rest of the night was just him listing more grim historical stats he'd looked up. Has anyone else had a date where someone's 'fun fact' was a total mood killer?

Honestly the "mood killer" part depends on the person. I'd find that way more interesting than talking about the weather or our jobs. It shows he's got a real interest instead of just making safe small talk.

Yeah but "real interest" can still be a total turn off if it's weird. Like if a guy starts talking about his bug collection or the specifics of drain pipes on a first date, that's not deep, it's just awkward. There's a big difference between interesting and oversharing some niche obsession.

Told my now-wife about my obscure hobby on our first date and she thought it was refreshing. Just own whatever you're into and see if they match your weird.
