First date last night and we hit a solid 45 minutes of silence

Met up at that new Italian place downtown. The food was fine. Then the conversation just... died. We both just stared at our plates. I counted. It was 45 minutes of nothing but chewing sounds and the waiter checking on us. I tried asking about his job, got a one word answer. Felt like forever. Anyone else have a date where the quiet just got painfully long?

You actually counted the minutes. That's a whole new level of bad. I can't imagine sitting through that much quiet with a stranger.

My worst was 30 minutes, but @piperb93 is right, that's just empty, not comfortable.

Remember when people said a comfortable silence was a good sign? I used to believe that too. But after a date where we just sat there for twenty minutes, I changed my mind. That kind of quiet isn't comfortable, it's just empty. It means you have nothing to say to each other. A good date should have some easy back and forth, not feel like you're both waiting to be rescued.
