Dropped $40 on a 'romantic' gondola ride in Venice and it was the most awkward hour of my life

Tbh I thought a gondola ride would be this super smooth romantic thing, but my date and I sat there in total silence while the gondolier sang loudly in Italian. We couldn't even make small talk because he was right there listening to everything. I paid $40 cash for a 45 minute loop through the canals and it felt like an eternity. My date kept checking her phone and I just stared at the water wishing I could jump out. The worst part was when we got off and she said 'well that was weird' and walked away. Has anyone else had a paid activity totally kill the vibe on a date?

Oh come on, @lindamartin, is it really that serious? Look, I get wanting to find the silver lining but sometimes a burnt meal or a flat tire is just that - a pain in the neck. You make it sound like every little hiccup is some gift from above. Not everything has to be a "memory in the making" - some things are just Mondays you want to forget.
