That cheap multimeter from Amazon read 24 volts on a dead circuit last week, almost cost me a finger

I swore my Fluke was overkill but after the knockoff showed a false zero on a 12V bus and I got zapped, I trashed it and paid for the real deal, anyone else had a cheap meter lie to them?

My cheap meter got me through years of speaker wiring without issue, maybe user error is the real problem here.

Exactly, user error is a real thing. I've been there where I thought my cheap meter was the problem, turned out I just had the leads in the wrong ports. Have you ever had a moment like that?

Got a cheap meter years ago and honestly thought it was fine until I borrowed a friend's nicer one. @matthews21 you might be right, it probably is user error half the time when people blame the meter. I messed up a reading on my cheap one once and blamed it for being inaccurate but looking back I just had the leads in the wrong spots. Still, a solid meter makes the job easier even if the cheap ones get the job done most days.
